in the most hollywood movie related to law & order, i always heard of 1st degree murder and 2nd degree murder
it raised doubt in my head as a children when murderer could obtain their 1st class degree if they are found guilty as charged
but things changed now
wether you kill someone with intention or not, you still in the death row...if you get lucky, people will never 'recognise' your dead body
